Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding (LAP-BAND® procedure)
The LAP-BAND® has been used for weight loss in the United States since 2001 when it was first approved by the FDA. This is a restrictive procedure that limits the amount of food that can be consumed. There is no cutting, stapling or reconstruction of the intestinal tract, and it is completely reversible.
Laparoscopic surgery means smaller incisions, less pain and quicker recovery time, along with a shorter hospital stay. A silicone band with an inflatable balloon is secured around the top portion of the stomach. Fluid is injected through a small port under the skin to adjust the size of the opening through the band. As a result, you will become satisfied with only small portions of food and dramatically reduce your hunger. Because this device is adjustable your physician can tighten or loosen it to meet your individual needs.
Patients can expect to lose an average 40-50% of excess weight within one year, and 60% at two years.
Laparoscopic Roux-Y Gastric Bypass (Gastric Bypass)
The gastric bypass differs from the LAP-BAND® because it combines restriction and malabsorption. First, the top portion of the stomach is stapled into a 1-2 ounce pouch that significantly reduces caloric intake and limits hunger. Next, the mid portion of the intestine is connected directly to the stomach pouch, bypassing the remainder of the stomach and upper small intestine. As a result less calories can be absorbed by your body.
This procedure requires no adjustments and is non-reversible.
Patients typically experience a 60% excess weight reduction in one year.
Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (Gastric Sleeve)
The gastric sleeve procedure is ideal for patients who are concerned about the potential side effects of a gastric bypass and do not want the constant adjustments of a LAP-BAND®. This is a restrictive procedure in which the outer portion of the stomach is stapled and removed leaving behind a tubular segment from the esophagus to the small intestine. The tubular segment of stomach measures 2-4 ounces which in turn creates a sensation of fullness with only small portions of food.
There is no reconstruction of the intestinal tract, no foreign body (as with the LAP-BAND®) and no malnutrition. This procedure is non-reversible.
Patients will expect to lose 45-55% excess weight within the first year.
